ART APPRECIATION:01:MAJULI MASK MAKING

The tradition of mask making is particularly strong in the Chamuguri Satra of Majuli which has a three hundred years old history.During the Bhakti Movement in Assam,this art of making masks and their use in Bhaonas was introduced and gradually evolved.The Satras of Assam have long since been the cultural hub of Assamese society where to this day Bhaonas are performed. Though it has become extinct elsewhere,it still survives in the Satras of Majuli.
