If we are seen by someone, it means we have been presenting. Even when we are inside a closed house and see ourselves in the mirror, we are still presenting— but to whom? To ourselves. So, the act of making something visible is a form of presentation. And this brings us to the concept of ‘design
Are we doing art or design? This introduces a new topic. When we design our expression, it becomes art. An expression without design is just a normal expression. To identify something as art, we must design our expression—deciding how we will present it. For example, we don’t go to the office immediately after waking up in the morning; we prepare ourselves by showering and dressing up. What does that signify? We compose ourselves, right? This means we are already presenting ourselves. To present ourselves effectively, we need design.
But what does design mean to you? Design is when we create art with a purpose, and art here is not limited to painting or drawing. Art, in a broader sense, encompasses the five art forms tied to our five senses. The mediums may vary—like perfume, music, taste, dance, and so on. Design plays a crucial role in all these forms
We often think of design as something industrial, related to products, mechanical, or technical. However, design begins when we recognize a need and come up with a solution to that problem. We then need to express this solution to others. If we present it carelessly, it may not be accepted, and the problem might not even be recognized as a problem. But when we present the solution in a thoughtful, appealing way, the problem and its solution become clear. When this happens, someone might admire the design, saying, ‘Wow, how beautiful that design is!’ As it gains acceptance, it may be seen as an ‘art piece.’ And when that art piece is appreciated repeatedly, it can become a highly admired ‘product’ in the market.
